- Teachin Dalkey, Holiday Cottages in Dalkey
- Planning application granted for Holiday Guest Houe / Hotel in Dalkey 2019
- Project description: PROPOSED HOLIDAY GUEST ROOM / HOTEL Taking into account the historic location, architectural heritage of the site and its context, the proposed design aim at balanced and sensitive development. The idea was to create a form which would be a dialogue of the modern contemporary architecture with traditional Irish cottage form. The design aim is to achieve a respectful solution of new modern development in the mixed existing historic context to maintain seamless and timeless architectural continuity of the place. The proposed scale, function and the form have been hugely influenced and subsequently adjusted during the design process to the scale of the existing site context. PROPOSED FORM AND SCALE The proposed scale of the cottages, the irregularity of their forms, facade setbacks as well as the proportions of the green open spaces between them, aim to reminisce the urban form of traditional cottage settlements. The units are set to avoid direct overlooking with neighbourhood buildings and between the units. The main windows of each of the guest bedroom are proposed to be tinted glass offering more privacy while reflecting back the surrounding green landscape. The units will be also fitted with internal curtains. The bedrooms will also have natural light coming from periscope 'chimney-like' skylights harvesting a direct and ambient light and redistributing it internally in a richly diffused way. The feature will also support the natural stack ventilation of the bedrooms. MATERIALS The proposed main two wall finishes follow the general concept idea to create a dialogue between contemporary and traditional architecture. The proposed stone cladding and fair-faced concrete create a distinctive contrast between a traditional, shaped by time and nature, and contemporary, artificially man-made stone. These two materials are applied independently emphasizing the cottages individual forms and functional aspects. The natural slate roof along with the stone and concrete facades will create a coherent grey-blue palate of colors making the entire proposed development a homogeneous in form and style. These natural and rich textures will be complemented by the palate of the greenery of the proposed extensive landscape.
