- Brief: The Meadows site in Salford covers an area of around 7 hectares and forms the northern anchor of the Irwell River Park project. With 3 new bridges already constructed at MediaCityUK, Spinningfields and Greengate along the 8km stretch of IRP, Salford City Council seeks design for a new landmark pedestrian bridge linking The Crescent (A6) with The Meadows. Adjacent to the University of Salford, this new bridge will further unlock the vast development potential of this major corridor linking Salford and Manchester, where game changing projects such as Salford Central and Greengate are already underway. Project description: The new Salford Meadows Bridge will link The Crescent and The Meadows as a part of the Middlewood Loop concept. It will also become a “gate” to the world of the tranquillity of nature, where the only sound one can hear is the whisper of grass; a “gate” which will tempt to escape from the decibels and rush of the urban life. The new bridge will link the two, so different, banks – the city and the nature, both clashing and competing for space. This extreme tension between the banks has been captured in the proposed form of the bridge. The sinusoidal harmony of the sound wave shape makes it dynamic and soft organic. The form constantly and monotonously sweeps between the peaks of the amplitude; yet it is captured, or rather “frozen”, in steel, pinning the two sides like a giant paper clip bended into a form of the absorber spring. The proposed form is rhythmical, unique and intriguing, making the bridge a surprising and an easily recognisable landmark of The Crescent / Chapel Street. The elegant appearance will also contribute positively to the setting of the Crescent Conservation Area. Through its striking line, the structure will be well visible and easy to spot even from far distance. The trusses elements will be in constant glare as their surfaces incline toward the sky, and after the sunset the bridge will turn into a romantic and nostalgic place litted by built-in lamps.
